The Uttar Pradesh Social Welfare Department has launched a Tree Asset Management System under which every tree located in its schools, hostels and other institutions will be assigned a unique identification number and digitally documented.
The initiative will cover Jai Prakash Narayan Sarvodaya Schools, Ashram Paddhati Schools, hostels and other institutions run by the department. Officials said the move is aimed at improving monitoring, protection and long-term conservation of trees on institutional campuses.
Under the new system, a detailed survey of all trees will be conducted and information including species, location, estimated age and current condition will be recorded in a Tree Asset Register. Photographs of each tree will also be maintained as part of a digital database.
According to guidelines issued by Principal Secretary, Social Welfare, Anurag Yadav, all trees within departmental institutions will now be treated as institutional assets.
Officials said no tree will be felled or undergo major pruning without approval from the competent authority. Annual physical verification of trees will also be carried out to monitor their condition and ensure conservation measures are being followed.
Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Social Welfare Asim Arun said the initiative is intended to strengthen environmental conservation efforts while creating awareness among students.
“Trees are an invaluable natural heritage and their protection is essential for future generations. The Tree Asset Management System will help ensure their protection while promoting environmental awareness among students and society," he said.
The department said the initiative is part of broader efforts to strengthen environmental protection and sustainable development within educational institutions.
Officials added that schools and hostels run by the department are expected to serve as models for environmental conservation, with the new system helping preserve green assets through regular monitoring and documentation.
