In a bizarre turn of events that left an entire village gripped by fear and superstition, what initially appeared to be a mysterious disappearance linked to folklore has now been revealed as a carefully planned elopement.

A 20-year-old woman, identified as Reena, went missing from her home in a village in Uttar Pradesh‘s Auraiya district, sparking panic among her family and neighbours. When relatives entered her room the following morning, they found a 5-foot-long snake’s shed skin placed on her bed along with sindoor, a black thread, broken bangles and other ritualistic items. The unusual scene quickly fuelled rumours across the village, with many claiming that the young woman had transformed into a snake and abandoned her human form.

Amid growing speculation and concern, Reena’s father lodged a missing person complaint with the police, prompting an investigation. However, from the outset, investigators suspected that the disappearance might be linked to a romantic relationship rather than anything supernatural.

The mystery took a dramatic turn on February 13, when Reena posted two videos on Instagram. In the clips, she appeared alongside a young man identified as Shyam and revealed that the two had eloped and married. Reena stated that they had deliberately placed the snake’s skin and other items on the bed to mislead her family and buy time to escape without immediate pursuit, describing their plan as something done in a “filmy" style.

In the video messages, Reena said that she and Shyam had been in a relationship for a long time, but her family had arranged her marriage elsewhere, which prompted them to run away. She appealed to authorities and relatives not to harass her husband or his family, insisting that the decision to leave was her own. She also urged that neither her family nor Shyam’s relatives be troubled over the matter.

Police officials confirmed they are aware of the videos and are currently searching for the couple to record Reena’s formal statement and complete the necessary legal procedures. What had initially been treated as a strange and possibly supernatural disappearance has now turned out to be a case of elopement, with authorities preparing to trace the couple and present them before the court as part of the ongoing process.
