American national arrested in Shimla after viral videos show him creating public nuisance at Ridge Maidan.

An American national was arrested in Shimla on Friday for allegedly causing a public disturbance and behaving indecently after videos purportedly showing the incident circulated widely on social media.

The accused, identified as Joshua Christian, was seen in the videos shouting at people, making obscene gestures and behaving aggressively at the Ridge Maidan in Shimla. The clips quickly went viral, drawing public outrage and prompting police intervention.

Taking cognisance of the video, Shimla Police identified and apprehended the individual under Section 114 of the Himachal Pradesh Police Act, an official said, according to PTI.

Another video allegedly linked to the same episode appears to show him knocking a cap off a man’s head while yelling at him. CNN-News18 could not independently verify the authenticity of the videos.

Following the arrest, police urged tourists and residents to maintain decorum in public places and warned that strict action would be taken against anyone found disturbing public order.

The incident also triggered strong reactions online, with several social media users criticising the man’s conduct.

An X handle, ‘The Modern Himachal’, wrote, “The same people who expect Indians to follow every rule abroad should remember: courtesy, civic sense, and respect for local norms are universal. A foreign tourist’s antics at Shimla’s Ridge ended in police custody (sic)."

Another user posted, “Don’t know when the West will learn to behave. Always busy teaching Indians and lecturing us over manners.Foreign tourist arrested in Shimla for creating public nuisance.Requesting Himachal Police to make him stay at Charleville Mansion for a night so his ancestors can personally tell him what Indians did to the Angrez."
