The United States government has announced a relaxation of its controversial visa bond policy for certain supporters travelling to the FIFA World Cup 2026, offering relief to fans from several participating nations ahead of the tournament.

Under immigration measures introduced during President Donald Trump’s administration, visa applicants from 50 developing nations were required to pay refundable bonds ranging from $5,000 to $15,000 before entering the United States. The policy was intended to reduce visa overstays and tighten immigration controls.

Who Qualifies For Exemption?

However, the United States Department of State confirmed on Wednesday that supporters from qualified World Cup nations who already possess match tickets will no longer have to pay the bond, provided they are part of FIFA’s priority visa system.

“We remain committed to strengthening US national security priorities while facilitating legitimate travel for the upcoming World Cup tournament," said Mora Namdar, the assistant secretary of state for consular affairs.

She added that the administration hoped to deliver the “biggest and best FIFA World Cup in history."

FIFA also welcomed the move. “Today’s announcement from the US State Department further demonstrates our ongoing collaboration with the US Government and the White House Task Force for the FIFA World Cup to deliver a successful, record-breaking and unforgettable global event," a FIFA spokesperson said in a statement.

Which Countries Benefit?

Five countries that have already qualified for the tournament — Algeria, Cape Verde, Ivory Coast, Senegal and Tunisia — were among those affected by the bond policy.

Meanwhile, concerns remain over broader immigration restrictions. Citizens from Haiti and Iran, both of which have qualified for the World Cup, continue to face severe travel limitations under current US policies.

Rights groups and tourism organisations have criticised the stricter visa environment, warning it could reduce international attendance at the tournament. A recent report by the American Hotel & Lodging Association suggested that visa complications and geopolitical concerns were already affecting hotel demand for the competition.

The World Cup begins on June 11 and will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
