US-Iran War Live Updates: Tensions between the United States and Iran escalated sharply on Saturday after reports emerged that US President Donald Trump abruptly returned to Washington, cancelling his planned weekend stay in New Jersey amid growing fears of a renewed military confrontation in the Middle East.
According to multiple US media reports, several senior American intelligence and defence officials have also scrapped their Memorial Day weekend plans and remain on standby in the capital as the White House weighs possible next steps in the rapidly evolving crisis.
Adding to concerns, reports from CBS News claimed that the Trump administration is preparing for a “fresh round” of military strikes on Iran. The report further stated that the president is increasingly inclined to approve major new operations unless there is a dramatic diplomatic breakthrough within the next 24 hours.
Iran Closes Airspace Amid War Preparations
Meanwhile, Iran has reportedly shut down portions of its western airspace until Monday morning through a NOTAM (Notice to Air Missions), intensifying speculation over possible military action in the region.
Iranian state-linked media outlet Tasnim News Agency reported that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and the country’s armed forces are preparing for what officials described as a potential “resumption of war” with the United States.
According to the report, Iranian military planners have drawn up a new “third struggle” strategy aimed at targeting US interests and allied assets in what was described as a “new and specific” manner.
The developments have sparked fresh uncertainty over whether ongoing backchannel diplomacy can prevent another cycle of escalation between Washington and Tehran.
Ceasefire Efforts Continue Behind The Scenes
Despite the aggressive rhetoric, diplomatic efforts appear to still be underway.
An Iranian source familiar with the negotiations told Tasnim that some progress had been made during recent discussions, though major disagreements remain unresolved.
“The current focus is on ending the war, and until that is finalized, no other issue will be negotiated,” the source reportedly said.
The source added that talks on disputed matters are continuing and that no final agreement has yet been reached. Pakistan is also said to be playing a mediation role, with officials continuing to exchange messages between both sides.
