Reigning men’s champion Jannik Sinner powered into the third round of the US Open on Thursday, while women’s favourite Iga Świątek and Coco Gauff were both pushed before advancing.
Sinner cruises past Popyrin
Top seed Sinner was clinical in New York, dispatching Australia’s Alexei Popyrin 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 to extend his Grand Slam hard-court winning streak to 23 matches. The Italian, who is defending his US Open crown, has made an authoritative start in his bid to become the first man to repeat as champion since Roger Federer’s five-year run from 2004–2008.
Sinner now faces Canadian 27th seed Denis Shapovalov in the third round on Saturday. Sinner has reached the final of all three Grand Slams this season, winning the Australian Open and Wimbledon and finishing runner-up to Carlos Alcaraz at the French Open.
Italian 10th seed Lorenzo Musetti matched his best US Open run with a comfortable victory over Belgium’s David Goffin. Russian 15th seed Andrey Rublev beat American wildcard Tristan Boyer in four sets and will meet Hong Kong’s Coleman Wong next.
Wong, a 21-year-old qualifier ranked 173rd, extended his fairytale run by beating Australia’s Adam Walton 7-6 (7/5), 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 — he became the first man from Hong Kong to win a Grand Slam singles match earlier in the tournament.
A shock five-set result saw ninth seed Karen Khachanov fall to Poland’s Kamil Majchrzak, the match finishing 2-6, 6-7 (4/7), 6-4, 7-5, 7-6 (10/5).

Play on the main showcourt opened with Iga Świątek surviving a scare: the 2022 US Open champion edged the Netherlands’ Suzan Lamens 6-1, 4-6, 6-4.
Świątek, who has won 16 of her last 17 matches following titles at Wimbledon and Cincinnati, will meet Russia’s 29th seed Anna Kalinskaya for a place in the last 16.
Home favourite Coco Gauff, the third seed and 2023 champion, battled through a tense encounter with Croatia’s Donna Vekić, winning 7-6 (7/5), 6-2.
Gauff, who has struggled with unforced errors in recent matches, was seen wiping away tears during her on-court interview as she thanked the crowd for their support. She faces Poland’s 28th seed Magdalena Fręch in the third round.
Former US Open champion Naomi Osaka impressed with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over American Hailey Baptiste, while seeds Ekaterina Alexandrova, Beatriz Haddad Maia, and Linda Nosková also moved through on Thursday.
