US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Sewa Teerth in New Delhi on Saturday during his four-day visit to India. Notably, this is his first visit to India as US Secretary of State, while he had previously travelled to the country as a US Senator and as part of congressional delegations.

The meeting comes amid growing cooperation between India and the United States across strategic, economic and technology sectors.

Rubio, who arrived in Delhi on Saturday after concluding his visit to Kolkata earlier in the day, is also scheduled to hold detailed discussions with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Sunday.

The talks are expected to focus on trade, energy cooperation, investment, emerging technologies and strengthening people-to-people ties between the two countries.

Russian Oil, QUAD On Agenda

QUAD cooperation, defence ties and India’s continued import of discounted Russian crude are expected to be key focus areas during US Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s visit to India.

The visit comes at a time when India continues purchasing large volumes of Russian oil at discounted prices, while the United States is seeking a greater presence in India’s energy sector through higher exports of LNG and crude oil.

Talks are also expected to cover strategic cooperation under the QUAD grouping, defence collaboration, emerging technologies and wider security challenges in the Indo-Pacific region.

Rubio Shares Post After Landing In India

Soon after arriving in India with his wife, Jeanette D. Rubio, the US Secretary of State shared a post on X, writing, “Landed in India. Looking forward to a great visit!"

Meanwhile, ahead of his India visit, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio reiterated Washington’s interest in expanding energy cooperation with India, saying the United States was prepared to supply “as much energy" as India was willing to buy.

Highlighting the economic importance of the partnership, Rubio said the US was looking to play a bigger role in meeting India’s growing and diversified energy requirements. He also indicated the possibility of cooperation involving Venezuelan crude supplies.

His remarks come at a time of rising global fuel prices and increasing concerns over shipping risks linked to tensions around the Strait of Hormuz.

Calling India a “great partner", Rubio said ties between the two democracies remained strong despite global uncertainties and geopolitical challenges.

He also stressed the need to deepen cooperation across multiple sectors and confirmed that he would attend the upcoming QUAD foreign ministers’ meeting in New Delhi during his visit
