US Senator Steve Daines has advocated for favourable provisions for pulse crops in any future trade deal with India during his visit from 17 to 19 January, stressing the need for stronger Washington–New Delhitrade ties, the US Embassy and Consulates in India said on Tuesday.

The visit included meetings in New Delhi with Minister of External Affairs S. Jaishankar, Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal, members of parliament, and business leaders from both countries.

In a press release, the US Embassy and Consulates in India said that Senator Daines, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, discussed a range of issues including US-India defence cooperation, secure supply chains, and a stable Indo-Pacific region.

During his visit, Daines specifically pushed for favourable provisions for pulse crops in any future bilateral trade agreements. Montana is the largest producer of pulse crops in the United States, while India is the world’s top consumer. He urged an acceleration of ongoing trade talks to conclude a fair and reciprocal deal.

“I came to India to reaffirm our two countries’ shared values and strategic partnership and to advocate on behalf of Montana’s pulse crop farmers," Daines said. “I appreciated Minister Goyal for listening to our farmers’ concerns and will continue to work with President Trump to press this important priority."

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor noted that the senator’s meetings with officials and the private sector were instrumental in advancing bilateral relations.

“As we work to take the partnership between our two nations to the next level in cooperation, I will ensure that senior government officials will regularly travel to India. As a key member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee with extensive experience in Asia, Senator Daines’ meetings with official and private sector stakeholders in New Delhi were instrumental in advancing our bilateral relationship," Gor said.

Daines also engaged with the business community to explore opportunities to expand trade, investment, and cooperation in advanced technologies, aiming to boost prosperity in both countries.
