The United States will invite Russian President Vladimir Putin to the upcoming G20 Summit 2026 Miami, a senior US official said on Thursday, in what could mark a shift in Washington’s approach towards Moscow.

The summit, scheduled for December 14–15 in Miami, will be hosted by the US as part of its presidency of the G20. Officials confirmed that all member nations, including Russia, will be invited to attend both ministerial meetings and the leaders’ summit.

However, US President Donald Trump expressed uncertainty over whether Putin would accept the invitation.

“I don’t know that he’s coming. I doubt he’d come, to be honest with you," Trump said, while adding that Putin’s presence “would be probably very helpful."

The invitation signals a potential easing of Western isolation of Putin, who has largely been shunned by many countries following Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Since returning to office, Trump has sought to revive ties with Moscow in an effort to broker an end to the conflict.

Trump also reiterated his criticism of former US President Barack Obama for removing Russia from the G8 in 2014 after its annexation of Crimea, saying Putin had been “very offended" by the decision.

Despite outreach efforts, progress on ending the war has been limited, even as Russia and Ukraine have held multiple rounds of talks. Trump has repeatedly blamed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for refusing territorial concessions.

The Kremlin said no decision has yet been made on Putin’s attendance. Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed that the invitation has been received but said discussions are ongoing.

Russia’s participation remains complicated by an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court in 2023 over the Ukraine war, which has limited Putin’s travel to countries that are members of the court. The United States is not part of the ICC.

Putin has not attended a G20 summit in person since 2019, missing subsequent meetings due to the pandemic and geopolitical tensions following the war in Ukraine.
