The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on has issued a red alert for nine districts in Uttarakhand, warning of very heavy rainfall and thunderstorms between 6 PM and 9 PM on Tuesday.

This comes just hours after a devastating cloudburst in Uttarkashi’s Dharali village triggered deadly flash floods and landslides, killing at least four people and leaving several others missing.

Red Alert Issued For Several Districts

Districts under the red alert include Almora, Bageshwar, Chamoli, Champawat, Nainital, Pithoragarh, Rudraprayag, Udham Singh Nagar, and Uttarkashi.

The IMD has urged residents in low-lying and river-adjacent areas to stay alert and move to safer ground if needed. Specific areas flagged include Janaki Chatti, Pulam Sumda, Purola, Barahat Range, Chinyalisaur, Badrinath, Kedarnath, Karnaprayag, Lohaghat, Didihat, Munsyari, Rudrapur, Khatima, and Jaspur.

Uttarkashi Schools Closed

In view of the worsening weather and rescue challenges, the Uttarkashi district administration has also ordered the closure of all government and private schools, including aanganwadis, on Wednesday.

Loudspeaker announcements are being made across vulnerable villages, advising people to evacuate and avoid riverbanks and landslide-prone areas.

The flash floods, caused by a cloudburst over the Kheer Gad area, sent a massive surge of water and debris through Dharali village and nearby regions. Dharali, a key halt on the route to Gangotri, saw widespread destruction. Several houses, homestays, restaurants, and hotels were either damaged or swept away in the flood.

Rescue and relief operations are underway, with teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Indian Army, and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) on the ground. However, access to some areas remains difficult due to blocked roads and heavy silt deposits.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said the state government is actively monitoring the situation and coordinating with all agencies involved in the rescue efforts.
