Valuables worth over ₹53 crore were stolen from a bank at Managuli town in Vijayapura district of Karnataka. Superintendent of Police Laxman Nimbaragi has formed eight teams to investigate the case.

Police said valuables, including gold jewellery and cash were stolen from the Canara Bank branch at Managuli town of Basavan Bagevadi taluk on May 25. Miscreants stole 58 kg 975 grams of gold and ₹5.20 lakh in cash from the bank.

Police suspect a group of thieves consisting of six to eight persons were involved in the crime.

“We have uncovered several facts and got important clues,” the SP said. According to him, investigation revealed that a duplicate locker key was used to rob the bank. The thieves, who first broke the lock of the bank’s entrance and entered, turned off the alarm siren and used the duplicate key to open the locker. The probe revealed that only one locker containing gold was opened and the gold in another locker was left intact.

It was suspected that people who had complete information about the bank were involved in the act. The SP said the bank window was broken and a black doll was worshipped to create an impression of black magic. This was done to divert the attention of the investigation, the police official said.
