US Vice President JD Vance said the aim of the latest round of talks with Iran was to lay the groundwork for further negotiations, stressing the need to “set up the structure for the second negotiations" as discussions opened in Switzerland on Sunday.

Speaking at the Burgenstock resort, Vance said the presence of senior leadership from both sides showed an intent to move the process forward.

“Leadership of the respective countries is here is because we wanted to first of all set up the structure for the second negotiations and second of all teams have a full support and they can always call us to break any barriers. We got a lot of work to do excited to do it," the US vice president told the press.

He called the meeting “historic" and said he hoped Washington and Tehran could reset their relationship.

“This is a historic meeting," Vance said, adding the goal was to “turn over a new leaf to transform our relationship with the people of Iran, and to extend an outstretched hand".
