‘Varanasi’ director SS Rajamouli plans anime continuation of ‘RRR’; Filmmaker in talks with Japanese studios

Filmmaker SS Rajamouli is exploring the possibility of an anime continuation for his global hit 'RRR', in talks with Japanese studios. He revealed his recent fascination with anime, praising its ability to deliver emotionally resonant and surprising storytelling. Rajamouli's next major project, 'Varanasi', is slated for an April 2026 release.

SS Rajamouli's 2022 action drama ‘RRR’ put the Indian cinema on a never-before-seen global level, which was highly praised for its impactful narration, emotional resonance and the sheer cinematic experience.

Recently, the ‘Baabhubali’ director shared the idea of presenting the epic to the world in the form of an anime.

SS Rajamouli opens up about ‘RRR’ anime plans

While speaking with a Polygon, ‘Varanasi’ director SS Rajamouli shared about working with some Japanese studios to bring out the anime version of the Ram Charan and Jr NTR starrer ‘RRR’, which is envisioned to be a continuation of the film.“We have been in talks with a few studios in Japan to make RRR in anime. So I'm waiting for things to get through.

Hopefully it happens, and hopefully we can announce a cool continuation of RRR anime,” Rajamouli said.

How anime is influencing Rajamouli’s storytelling

During his chat, the ‘Eega’ director also shared that he has gotten fond of anime recently and also talked about how anime is impacting his work for the better. He said, “I was introduced to anime very recently and what I have seen has blown me away. Why did I miss out on these things for so long?”SS Rajamouli, who has always considered projecting human emotions correctly in your work, is a factor for the audience to connect well.

He praised how the world of anime has the ability to stun the audience with a lot of emotions. “It opened up new avenues for me to understand how stories can be told in a more attacking and impressive manner. How you stun the audience with unexpected moments and with a lot of emotion added to that. It's not just a surprise, it's very emotionally driven, compelling movements, which are also surprises,” he added.

SS Rajamouli’s next big project ‘Varanasi’

Speaking of his upcoming work, SS Rajamouli is busy with his co-stars Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra and Prithiviraj Sukumaran for his upcoming magnum opus, ‘Varanasi’. The movie is announced to release on April 7, 2026.
