Vedhi calls for hartal along Chellanam-Kochi coast on June 30

The Chellanam-Kochi Janakeeya Vedhi has called for a hartal along the Chellanam-Kochi coast on June 30 in protest against the delay in constructing a tetrapod seawall and groynes to stave off marauding tidal waves.

The call comes in the wake of one of the worst episodes of sea incursion being experienced by the residents of the Chellanam panchayat since the onset of monsoon this year.

The organisation has been demanding the construction of a seawall in the areas north of Puthenthode for the past four years. However, the government has been apathetic to the demand, the Vedhi said in a release.

Therefore, a hartal has been called to demand the immediate construction of a tetrapod seawall and groynes in the area. According to the statement, social and voluntary organisations will support the protest.
