Victor Wembanyama has made it clear where he wants to spend the prime of his NBA career.
The San Antonio Spurs superstar has agreed to a five-year, $252 million rookie-scale maximum contract extension, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.
The deal, which includes a player option in the fifth and final season, keeps one of basketball’s brightest young stars in San Antonio for the foreseeable future.
In a message to Spurs fans after the agreement, Wembanyama wrote: “Spurs family, I’m here to stay. Whatever it takes."

Wembanyama Leaves Millions On The Table
The most eye-catching aspect of the extension is not just its value, but what Wembanyama chose to give up.
Rather than signing the 30% supermax rookie extension, which could have been worth around $303 million, the 21-year-old opted for the standard 25% maximum deal.
According to reports, he and the Spurs discussed multiple contract structures before settling on the agreement, a decision that could save San Antonio roughly $50 million over the life of the contract and provide greater financial flexibility to strengthen the roster.
Without the supermax escalators, Wembanyama’s extension ranks as the third-largest rookie extension in NBA history, behind only Cade Cunningham and Evan Mobley, whose deals are each worth $269 million.
Historic Rise Continues
Wembanyama’s decision comes after a sensational third NBA season in which he established himself as one of the league’s elite two-way players.
He guided the Spurs to the NBA Finals while averaging career-best numbers of 25.0 points, 11.5 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game. He also led the NBA with 3.08 blocks while adding 1.03 steals per contest.
His dominant campaign earned him NBA Defensive Player of the Year honours, becoming the youngest player ever to win the award and its first unanimous winner since it was introduced in 1982-83. He was also named to the All-NBA First Team, All-Defensive First Team and earned his second consecutive All-Star selection, this time as a starter.
Wembanyama also became just the third player in NBA history to lead the league in blocks for three straight seasons.
The former No. 1 overall pick has already appeared in 181 regular-season games, averaging 23.4 points, 11.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 3.46 blocks and 1.14 steals.
