Congress MLA and Madhya Pradesh Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar on Tuesday took to social media alleging that newborns were being gnawed by rats at Indore's Maharaja Yeshwantrao (MY) Hospital, and slammed BJP-led government for the same.

Sharing a video of the hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Singhar alleged that infants admitted there were gnawed by rats. The video shows a rat roaming around in the NICU, crawling from one bed to another while crawling through wires and other equipment.

Umang Singhar, condemned the incident, holding the state government responsible for what he described as "genocide" due to gross negligence.

“Government, have mercy on the newborns...! Look at the condition of Indore's MY Hospital — rats are gnawing on innocent newborns in the NICU and the BJP government has not been able to do pest control for five years!” Singhar posted [translated from hindi].

He further said, “This is not just negligence, it is genocide. Hospitals are made to save lives, but the BJP has turned them into a den of death. Doctors and the system kept lying, rats kept sucking the blood of children.”

Calling the incident “shameful,” Singhar accused the government of criminal failure and asked whether this reflects the BJP’s vision of a “healthy Madhya Pradesh.”
