Video: Pilot averts mishap due to bad weather, lands chopper at school ground

A major mishap was averted in Uttarakhand on Saturday after a private helicopter made an emergency landing at a school ground in Kathgodam following a sudden spell of bad weather, with all passengers and crew escaping unharmed.

The helicopter was returning to Haldwani from Pithoragarh when it encountered heavy rain, dense cloud cover and near-zero visibility, forcing the pilot to abort the flight and look for a safe place to land.

According to officials, the emergency landing was carried out at the Municipal Inter College ground in Kathgodam at around 4 pm. The pilot decided to land after deteriorating weather conditions made it unsafe to continue flying.

The helicopter landed safely without any damage, and all those on board, including two passengers and crew members, were reported to be safe.

CHILDREN PLAYING EVADED SAFELY

At the time of the landing, around 10 to 12 children were playing on the school ground. Police said the children were immediately moved to a safe location before the helicopter touched down, preventing any injuries on the ground.

Several children present at the playground recorded videos of the emergency landing and alerted the police. Local police and district administration officials rushed to the spot soon after receiving information about the incident.

Officials said the pilot's timely decision and presence of mind helped avert what could have turned into a serious accident amid the rapidly worsening weather conditions.

UTTARAKHAND RECEIVING HEAVY RAINFALL

The emergency landing comes as several parts of Uttarakhand continue to witness heavy rainfall and unstable weather, prompting authorities to remain on alert. The India Meteorological Department has forecast continued rain in many districts, increasing the risk of low visibility, landslides and disruptions to air and road travel.

Authorities are expected to review the circumstances that led to the precautionary landing, though initial information indicates the helicopter was forced to land solely due to adverse weather conditions. The incident once again highlights the challenges posed by monsoon weather for aviation operations in the Himalayan region, where sudden changes in visibility and cloud cover can significantly affect flight safety.
