Child killed in Bilaspur road crash, minor suspected of driving speeding car
A child was killed and a scooter rider suffered serious injuries after a speeding car rammed into a scooter before crashing into a school bus in Chhattisgarh on Sunday morning. CCTV footage of the collision has gone viral, while police are investigating whether a minor was driving the car at the time of the accident.
The accident took place on Smart Road outside Sanjeevani Hospital in Bilaspur city. According to the police, a Kia Carens was travelling at high speed when it first hit an Activa scooter and then crashed into a school bus.
The impact shattered the scooter, while the front portion of the car was badly damaged. Smoke was seen coming out of the vehicle's engine after the collision. The crash triggered panic in the area.
Police from Civil Lines police station reached the spot soon after receiving information about the accident and shifted the injured scooter rider to SIMS Hospital for treatment.
During the investigation, police recovered an identity card of Maharshi School from the injured rider's pocket and began efforts to establish his identity before informing his family. Relatives later reached the hospital.
MINOR SUSPECTED OF DRIVING CAR
Police have taken four occupants of the car into custody for questioning and seized the vehicle.
Initial findings suggest that the car may have been driven by a minor. However, police said the driver's age and other facts are still being verified. If the investigation confirms that a minor was driving, action will be taken under the Motor Vehicles Act and other applicable legal provisions.
There are also reports that another minor was riding the scooter on the wrong side of the road. Police are examining CCTV footage and other evidence to establish the sequence of events.
POLICE TO INSTALL DIVIDER
Additional Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Ramgopal described the accident as "very painful" and said the traffic police have decided to install a divider at the accident spot as a precautionary measure.
He said the Civil Lines police are conducting a detailed investigation and added that the driver of the car is suspected to be a minor, though the matter is still under investigation.
The accident has once again raised concerns over speeding, reckless driving and minors operating vehicles. Police are continuing their investigation to determine responsibility for the crash and whether traffic violations contributed to the fatal accident.
