The United States launched fresh strikes on Iran on Wednesday, a day after ships were attacked in the Strait of Hormuz. The strikes appear to be the most intense since the ceasefire.

Videos emerging from Bandar Abbas reportedly show a US strike on Shahid Haqqani Port. The port city, which houses Iran’s main naval base, was among several locations hit during the operation. Videos showed thick orange clouds of smoke rising from the targeted area.

The latest attacks come as tensions between Washington and Tehran escalate once again.

Iran may shut Strait of Hormuz

Unconfirmed reports cited by Middle East Spectator claimed that personnel of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy had received preliminary instructions to block all traffic through the Strait of Hormuz until further notice.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important shipping routes, and any disruption to traffic through the passage is closely watched because of its impact on global energy supplies.

Following the renewed military escalation, oil prices climbed amid concerns over possible disruption to shipping through the strategic waterway.

Trump attends NATO summit

The latest developments come as US President Donald Trump is in Turkey to attend the NATO Summit.

The renewed military action against Iran and the reports surrounding the Strait of Hormuz have added to tensions in the region as world leaders gather for the alliance’s summit.
