Known for portraying dark, volatile characters with unsettling ease, Vijay Varma has won praise for performances in projects like Dahaad, Mirzapur and Kaalkoot. But last year, he took a sharp turn with Gustaakh Ishq.
The actor traded brooding silences and moral ambiguity for wide-eyed romance, revealing a softer, more vulnerable side of himself that audiences had rarely seen.
Reflecting on the transition, Vijay admitted that shedding the emotional weight of his previous characters wasn’t easy. Vijay shared, “For Gustaakh Ishq, I had to unlearn the toughness I had gathered from playing some extremely difficult men on screen.
I had to remind myself of the innocence and wide-eyed-ness I once had when I started out as a college kid in my early days at FTII, Mumbai.”Even though Gustaakh Ishq didn’t click commercially, it allowed Vijay to showcase his range. When asked if he’s a romantic at heart, he said, “Yes, I am romantic, and it is all over the internet.” However, he acknowledged the tug-of-war between personal ambition and matters of the heart. “Sometimes ambition can come in the way of love. Ambition and romance can fight with each other. But I have often chosen romance over anything else.
I’m very sensitive and I feel things very deeply, and I think my ability to feel so deeply, something that I can’t really switch off, is probably one of the main reasons I became an actor.”
