The cancellation of NEET-UG 2026 examination by National Testing Agency (NTA) due to a paper leak has resulted in Tamil Nadu once again criticising the all-India exam, with new Chief Minister Vijay pushing the Centre to “abolish" the NEET-based examinations for medical courses.
The NTA officially cancelled the NEET (UG) 2026 examination held on May 3 following a massive outcry and a Rajasthan Special Operations Group (SOG) probe that found a “guess paper" matching over 100 actual questions.
Tamil Nadu has been opposing NEET since beginning arguing that it favours affluent, urban, English-educated students while excluding underprivileged students educated in vernacular medium.
Following the recent NTA order, the new Chief Minister said in a post on social media saying that this was not the first time NEET has been compromised.
“In 2024, the question paper was leaked and FIRs were registered across six States and transferred to the CBI… a high-level Committee of Experts under Dr K Radhakrishnan, former Chairman of ISRO, submitted 95 comprehensive recommendations for reforms. Despite all this, within two years, another paper leak has occurred and the examination has been cancelled," he said in a statement.
He also pointed out “conclusive proof of flaws and structural flaws in a national level exam".
“The Governments of Tamil Nadu, has been consistently and unanimously opposing NEET since its very inception. The introduction of NEET has severely disadvantaged the students from rural areas, Government schools, Tamil medium backgrounds, and socio-economically disadvantaged families. The Government of Tamil Nadu reiterates the State long pending demand to abolish NEET and permit the States to fill all seats under the State quota in MBBS, BDS, and AYUSH courses on the basis of Class 12 marks," he added.
Last year, then CM MK Stalin’s Bill seeking exemption from the NEET was rejected by the President. InJoseph November, the state moved the Supreme Court challenged the President’s decision.
