The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved a one-year extension for Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, extending his tenure until July 14, 2027.
The extension has been granted under Fundamental Rule 56(d), which allows service extensions in the public interest for key government posts. Misri assumed charge as Foreign Secretary in July 2024.
The move is aimed at ensuring continuity at the top of the Ministry of External Affairs during a period of significant diplomatic engagement, including India’s G20-related engagements, Quad initiatives, and key bilateral tracks with the United States, China, the European Union, and countries in the Global South.
WHO IS VIKRAM MISRI?
A 1989-batch Indian Foreign Service officer, Misri was born in Srinagar in 1964 and was educated in Gwalior. He holds a bachelor’s degree in history from Hindu College, Delhi University, and an MBA from XLRI.
A fluent Mandarin speaker, he has served as private secretary to three prime ministers: Inder Kumar Gujral, Manmohan Singh and Narendra Modi. In his diplomatic career, he has served in Brussels and Tunis, and as India’s ambassador to China, Myanmar and Spain, as well as Deputy National Security Advisor.
During his tenure, Misri played a key role in managing India’s diplomatic communication with China following the 2020 eastern Ladakh standoff and the Galwan Valley clashes.
More recently, as Foreign Secretary, he served as the public face of the Ministry of External Affairs during Operation Sindoor, addressing media briefings during the brief India-Pakistan escalation. Following the de-escalation announcement, he was subjected to online trolling, drawing support from senior diplomats and political leaders.
