Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma were in the stands at Lord's on Sunday to watch India's Women's T20 World Cup clash against Australia, offering support during the team's must-win Group A match.Former India head coach Ravi Shastri was also present at the venue.
Pictures and videos of Kohli watching the game were widely shared on social media as India fought to keep their hopes of reaching the semi-finals alive.
On the field, captain Harmanpreet Kaur led India's batting with 56 off 27 balls, but the rest of the line-up could not score quickly enough as India finished on 170 for four in the first innings.
India came into the match needing a win after South Africa defeated Bangladesh by four wickets earlier in the day.
That result moved South Africa to second place in Group A with eight points, behind Australia. India had to beat Australia to stay in contention for the semi-finals.Openers Smriti Mandhana (38) and Shafali Verma (34) gave India a steady start with a 66-run partnership. India reached 43 without loss at the end of the powerplay, but the scoring rate remained below seven runs an over for most of that period.Shafali looked to speed things up by attacking off-spinner Ashleigh Gardner, hitting her for two sixes.
However, while trying to attack Australia captain Sophie Molineux, she lost her balance and was bowled.Mandhana's innings ended soon after following a mix-up with Jemimah Rodrigues (34 off 28 balls). Georgia Wareham's throw from the deep found bowler Lucy Hamilton, leaving Mandhana short of her ground.Rodrigues began positively with a boundary off Molineux but could not maintain the momentum. She was dropped on 27 by Annabel Sutherland in the deep, with the chance resulting in six runs, and was dropped again on 33 off the very next ball.India later retired Rodrigues out before the final over to bring in Richa Ghosh, though Ghosh faced only one delivery.Harmanpreet provided the late push India needed. She attacked both Wareham and Molineux and reached her half-century in 26 balls. In the final over, she hit Molineux for three consecutive sixes as India collected 23 runs from the over to finish with 170, giving Australia a target of 171.
