Walker Kessler, the newly acquired Los Angeles Lakers center, got engaged to Abbie Stockard, Miss America 2025, over the Fourth of July weekend, just days after the Lakers landed him in a blockbuster sign-and-trade from the Utah Jazz.
The 24-year-old announced the news Sunday on Instagram, sharing a photo with Stockard and a caption thanking God for the life they're about to build together. The proposal caps what's already been the biggest week of Kessler's career, a four-year, $130 million contract, a move to one of the league's most-watched franchises, and now a fiancée who was crowned Miss America a little over a year ago.
A whirlwind week, capped by a ring
It's rare that a single week reshapes both someone's career and their personal life, but that's exactly what happened here.
On Wednesday, ESPN broke the news that the Lakers were acquiring Kessler from the Jazz, sending two unprotected first-round picks and two pick swaps to Utah in return. Four days later, on the Fourth of July, Kessler proposed to Stockard, and she said yes. "I give thanks to God I get to spend the rest of my life with you, Abbie.
Here's to the future together. I love you so much," Kessler wrote on Instagram, alongside a photo of the two wearing matching "fiancé" and "fiancée" caps in their kitchen.
Stockard posted her own tribute, calling their story one that "only the Lord could have written."
How a sideline photo turned into a proposal
Credit goes to his mother, Andrea. Back during Kessler's rookie year, she was at an Auburn-Alabama basketball game and snapped a photo of a dancer performing on the court. She showed it to her son and pushed him to find out who she was. He didn't recognize her and told his mom that photographing strangers wasn't really her job.
She kept at it anyway, and a few weeks later she had a name: Abbie Stockard. Kessler messaged her on Instagram, and that was that.
The Miss America moment that went viral
Their story picked up national attention back in January 2025, when Stockard, then an Auburn nursing student and cheerleader, competed for the Miss America title in Orlando. Kessler, still with the Jazz at the time, watched her win unfold from a screen during a team dinner and reacted the way a lot of people online instantly recognized — hand over his mouth, jumping out of his seat, completely stunned.
Footage of that reaction spread fast, turning him into a minor viral figure well before this week's engagement news.
He's since joked that dating Miss America wasn't exactly something he saw coming.Stockard, now 23, is pursuing pediatric nursing and has said the engagement will likely mean spending more time in Los Angeles as Kessler settles into his new team. For Kessler, the personal news arrives just as he's trying to bounce back from a torn labrum that limited him to five games last season. On the court, the Lakers are counting on him as the veteran center Luka Dončić reportedly asked the front office to prioritize this offseason.
Off it, he's now planning a wedding. Neither side has announced a date yet.
