The USS Gerald R Ford aircraft carrier has departed from West Asia after taking part in operations against Iran — a move that has reduced the presence of the U.S. military in the region — even as diplomatic efforts remain stalled.
According to a report by AFP, the Ford is currently in the U.S. European Command area of responsibility, said an official.
The Ford — which has been at sea for over 10 months — took part in U.S. operations in the Caribbean, when Washington’s military launched strikes against alleged drug-smuggling boats and seized Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
What’s The Status Of War?
At present, the United States and Iran are in an open-ended ceasefire. However, the talks remain stalled, with Tehran blocking the Strait of Hormuz and the United States continuing the blockade of Iranian ports.
U.S. President Donald Trump said the ongoing actions against Iran should be viewed as a military operation rather than a formal war, asserting that Tehran is seeking a deal.
He claimed the blockade is weakening Iran’s economy, adding the U.S. actions have significantly reduced Tehran’s military capabilities, including its naval, air, drone and missile capacities.
Iran Renews Peace Proposal
Iran has offered a new peace proposal to the U.S. in an attempt to end stalled negotiations. Tehran passed the proposal to mediators in Pakistan on Thursday night.
However, the contents of the proposal remain unclear.
