A 42-year-old woman and her teenage son were allegedly murdered at their home in Delhi’s Lajpat Nagar, the police said on Saturday, adding that they have arrested a store worker who was attempting to flee after committing the crime.

The victims, identified as Ruchika Sewani and her 14-year-old son Krish, were found with multiple injuries inside their residence, with police saying the accused, 24-year-old Mukesh, worked at a clothing store owned by Ruchika’s husband, Kuldeep Sewani.

“I never scolded him over anything. I was always polite. Then why…?" Kuldeep said about Mukesh, as quoted by The Indian Express.

Police said Mukesh was upset after being reprimanded for taking frequent leave and had planned the attack. He was arrested at the New Delhi railway station early Thursday, hours after the murders.

“At around 9.30 pm, I got a frantic call saying there is blood inside the house and no one is opening the door," said Ketan, Kuldeep’s cousin. Ketan rushed to the house and later entered with the help of the police.

According to Kuldeep’s relatives, Mukesh had earlier worked for Ketan before joining Kuldeep’s store.

“Last month, he took a four-day holiday; he said he was getting engaged. But he came back after almost 25 days. He then took another holiday after a couple of days… He then came back about eight days ago," said Surender, a colleague at the store.

Badrul Hassan, another employee, said: “Kaun sa boss apne employee ko nai daant ta (Which employer doesn’t scold his staff)? How can that lead to this (murder)?" he said.

Neighbours said the family had been living in the area for many years and were well-known in the community.

Vishal Chopra, a neighbour, said his son alerted him to blood stains visible through the house’s staircase. “My son… said there was blood on the stairs of his house. I rushed home," he said.

His son, Arnav, 22, added, “He (Kuldeep) said he had been calling aunty (Ruchika), but she wasn’t responding. He had also sent an employee to check on them before he came. When no one opened the door, he climbed atop a car and spotted blood through the window."

Police have registered a case under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code. An investigation is underway in the case, said officials.
