FBI Director Kash Patel, in a 2005 letter, reportedly admitted that he was arrested twice over incidents involving alcohol. According to a report by The Intercept, with the incidents dating back to his time as a student.
The report states that Patel disclosed the arrests in a letter included in his personnel file while he was working as a public defender in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The disclosure was made after his employer requested clarification on prior arrests he had listed in his application for admission to the Florida Bar.
According to the report, one of the incidents occurred during his undergraduate years in Virginia, where he was arrested for public intoxication. The second arrest took place in New York City while he was attending law school and involved public urination after leaving a bar.
In the letter cited by The Intercept, Patel addressed both incidents, describing them as out of character. “Both of these incidents are not representative of my usual conduct of behavior, and it is my hope that the [Florida Bar] views them as an anomaly," he wrote.
The report highlights that the disclosures were part of routine background checks required for legal certification, where applicants must provide full details of any past legal issues.
