The medical emergency involving former Pakistan Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa has ignited a firestorm of speculation and claims of internal military strife. While the official narrative from his family and the military’s media wing, ISPR, maintains that the General suffered a “slip and fall" in his washroom at 4.30 am on Tuesday, CNN-News18 has learnt that alternative reports suggest a far more violent encounter.

The military establishment confirms that General Bajwa has undergone major head surgery and remains under observation in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Rawalpindi. His brother-in-law, Naeem Ghumman, stated that the General was “barefoot" when he slipped, leading to a skull fracture. However, CNN-News18 has accessed reports from sources claiming that the injury was the result of a physical assault by two or three military personnel.

These sources allege that the incident was triggered by deep-seated personal enmity involving junior intelligence personnel. It is claimed that during the high-stakes “regime change" period in 2022, when Imran Khan’s government was ousted, General Bajwa had allegedly directed the ISI to target the homes and family members of certain officers who were resisting the political shift. The current assault is being viewed by some as a delayed act of “personal vengeance" by those whose families were affected during his tenure.

Top Indian intelligence sources have expressed deep scepticism regarding the “washroom fall" story, labelling it a classic damage-control tactic. Assessments suggest that the speed with which the ISPR issued its version indicates a desperate priority to prevent public discussion about the simmering tensions between the Pakistan Army’s upper and middle ranks.

Indian agencies believe the incident points to unresolved, visceral anger stemming from the 2022 political crisis. During that phase, decisions made at the top of the military hierarchy reportedly crossed traditional boundaries, reaching into the personal and family spaces of serving officers. Intelligence assessments suggest this breach of internal military “etiquette" has created a toxic environment of resentment, where former commanders are no longer viewed with the traditional “reverence" usually afforded to retired four-star generals.
