Jammu Kashmir Weather: Heavy rain across the valley disrupts normal life brings relief from unusually warm weather.

Fresh snow covered Jammu and Kashmir in white on Thursday as heavy rain lashed several parts of the Union Territory bringing down temperatures and offering relief from the recent heatwave like conditions.

Several videos shared on X showed snow blanketing the higher reaches of Kashmir including mountain roads huts and open stretches covered in white after fresh snowfall. Other clips showed rain soaked roads and poor visibility in many areas of the valley.

According to officials fresh snowfall was recorded in the Gurez sector of north Kashmir’s Bandipora district Zojila Pass along the Srinagar Leh National Highway, and Sonamarg. A few other high altitude areas also received snowfall during the early hours of Thursday.

At the same time plains including Srinagar witnessed intermittent rainfall through the morning.

Officials said heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms late on Wednesday night caused damage to a road in Bandipora district. Mud and rainwater also entered several nearby houses creating difficulties for residents.

The rainfall further led to waterlogging and mudflow in the area affecting the movement of vehicles and locals.

The sudden spell of rain and snowfall brought relief to people after days of unusually warm weather across the valley.

The Meteorological Department said light rain and thundershowers along with gusty winds and hailstorms may continue at several places on Thursday and Friday.

The department added that weather conditions are expected to remain mostly dry during the first half of the day with chances of brief showers at isolated and scattered places till May 25.
