MUMBAI: Messages on social media about a promotional offer by a clothing retail outlet at Infiniti Mall in Malad West triggered a massive crowd at the mall premises on Saturday. Police had to intervene and announce that there was no such offer, after which the crowd dispersed.

No untoward incident was reported. Sources said messages went viral on social media claiming that a clothing retail outlet at the mall was selling outfits for Rs 1. Hordes of shoppers gathered at the mall since morning and waited for the outlet to open so they could avail of the offer. Fearing a stampede, police were called in. Announcements were made clarifying that there was no such discount offer, and people were asked to disperse calmly.

Nobody was injured, police confirmed. A promotional offer by the clothing brand NEWME, falsely claiming garments for just Rs 1, triggered massive crowds and chaos at Infiniti Mall in Malad West. Hundreds of shoppers, many of whom had been queuing since early morning, rushed into the mall as soon as it opened. Eyewitness accounts described people running towards the NEWME store on the second floor in a frenzied bid to grab the ultra-low-priced items.
