American golfer Scottie Scheffler couldn’t believe his luck after missing the easiest of putts on the par-four 13th at Renaissance Club. As his attempt for a birdie on the par-four 13th went agonisingly to the left of the hole, he raised his hands in frustration and shouted at the ball and his luck.
Eventually, he seemed to be seeing the funny side of the simple miss before tapping home to record a par. Fans on the internet also noted how the World Number One adopted the ‘Happy Gilmore’ style for the incident. The missed putt made him finish joint eighth alongside Ludvig Aberg and Xander Schauffele with a score of nine under.
Afterwards, in an interview, although he showed mixed emotions about his performance, Scheffler sounded motivated to play at the last major this season, The Open Championship, well aware that he has a good chance to add another trophy to his cabinet.
“Yeah, definitely got adjusted to the time zone. I feel like I did some good stuff this week. It was unusually warm this week. We’ll see what the weather is like next week but overall, I could have played a little bit better this week. But overall, pleased with how I played the last couple days.." he said.
" I feel like I’m really close. I feel like I was close to playing some really good golf. Just got to get some momentum… I’ll get out and play a decent amount. I’ll spend some time out on the cours," he added.
Meanwhile, world number 158 Chris Gotterup outshot Rory McIlroy to win the Scottish Open by two strokes. Gotterup’s four-under-par round of 66, finishing on 15 under, proved too good for McIlroy, who tied for second place with England’s Marco Penge. The American, who had only one previous win on the PGA Tour, also secured a spot in next week’s British Open at Royal Portrush.
“This is awesome," said Gotterup. “It’s all hitting me. It’s just so cool.
“I played really well this week, and I knew today was going to be tough. I hung in there like a champ and finished it off in style."
McIlroy will receive a hero’s welcome on his Northern Ireland homecoming next week but missed the chance to win for the first time since his Masters triumph in April.
