Wayne Rooney shares advice for Arsenal wonderkid Max Dowman before his first pro contract

Wayne Rooney has offered advice to teenage football sensation Max Dowman after the young midfielder made headlines with a decisive goal for Arsenal FC in the Premier League. The 16-year-old academy star scored late in the match to secure a win against Everton FC, managed by David Moyes.

Like the Arsenal youngster, Rooney also burst onto the Premier League scene at just 16 while playing for Everton. However, despite Dowman’s growing reputation, he cannot yet sign a professional contract because of his age.

The club has confirmed that the deal will arrive once he turns 17 on New Year’s Eve, allowing him to officially join the senior squad.

Max Dowman’s match-winning goal against Everton quickly made him one of the youngest stars to make an impact in the Premier League this season. At only 16 years and 73 days old, the midfielder showed remarkable confidence on the big stage. His performance also helped Arsenal maintain their lead over Manchester City in the title race.

During an appearance on the BBC programme The Wayne Rooney Show, Rooney spoke about the youngster’s situation. He explained that because Dowman is still in school, he is technically considered an academy player rather than a full member of the senior squad. Rooney suggested that young players in such situations sometimes only receive small allowances or expense reimbursements until they sign professional deals.The former England captain humorously recalled how youth players used to claim travel expenses when joining international camps.

He explained that when he attended youth team gatherings, players were reimbursed for the distance they travelled. Rooney joked that he once tried to claim a longer journey by naming a location far from where he actually started, simply to receive a slightly larger payment.Rooney also remembered the early days of his career with Everton. When he famously scored a stunning late winner against Arsenal in 2002, he was still earning a modest weekly amount as a young academy player.

That goal made him the youngest scorer in Premier League history at the time and ended Arsenal’s long unbeaten run.Looking back, Rooney said that he had to rely on financial help from his parents before signing his first professional contract at 17. He even recalled visiting a car dealership with dreams of buying a luxury vehicle once he turned professional. However, he later realised he had a sponsorship agreement with Ford, which meant he had to choose a Ford car instead of the high-end model he initially wanted.
