A Delhi man booked for allegedly racially abusing three women from Arunachal Pradesh has apologised for his remarks, saying the incident escalated “in the heat of the moment" and that he did not intend to insult the northeastern community.

Harsh Singh, one of the accused in the case registered by Delhi Police, said he and his family were cooperating fully with the investigation and had faith in the police and the judiciary.

“We are definitely ashamed. I am not such a person, but it was in the heat of the moment. We did not intend to do so," Singh said in a video statement, adding that he would accept whatever punishment the law decides after an impartial probe.

The controversy arose from an altercation in south Delhi’s Malviya Nagar, where three women from Arunachal Pradesh alleged that they were subjected to racial slurs, humiliation and intimidation by their neighbours following a dispute over repair work at their rented apartment.

According to police, the incident took place on February 20 around 3.30 pm, when the women had called an electrician to their fourth-floor flat to install an air conditioner.

During drilling, dust and debris reportedly fell into the apartment below, prompting objections from Singh and his wife, Ruby Jain. What began as a disagreement over the falling debris soon escalated into a heated exchange.

The women alleged that the couple hurled abuses and made derogatory, racist remarks aimed at them and the wider northeastern community.

A video of the confrontation, now widely circulated on social media, appears to show the accused using slurs such as “momo" and making offensive allegations that the women worked at massage parlours.

In the footage, a police officer is also seen attempting to calm both sides as the argument intensified.

In parts of the video, the accused woman is allegedly heard making further offensive comments and asserting social and economic superiority, while the complainants are seen strongly objecting to the remarks and demanding accountability.

The women have claimed they were called “gutter-chaap," told to “go and sell momos," and subjected to other humiliating comments.

Police said an FIR has been registered against Harsh Singh and Ruby Jain, and the matter is under investigation.

Singh, in his statement, appealed against “media trials" and said his family members were being harassed online, adding that he personally apologised to people from the Northeast.

The complainants, meanwhile, have demanded a formal apology, stating that the remarks were not just a personal insult but an attack on the dignity of the northeastern community as a whole.
