Former Portugal manager Paulo Bento has admitted that his relationship with football icon Cristiano Ronaldo became strained during their time together with the national team. Bento managed Portugal from 2010 to 2014 and said the bond between the two was not the same by the end of his tenure.
The coach explained that he always believed in maintaining authority inside the dressing room and never wanted to sacrifice his principles to please any player.Speaking recently on the Hora Bolas programme on Antena 1, Bento reflected on the challenges of managing a squad filled with strong personalities. While Ronaldo remained Portugal’s biggest star during those years, Bento stressed that the manager must always remain the final decision-maker.
He said a coach cannot allow outside influence to control selections or tactical choices. According to Bento, maintaining discipline and a clear hierarchy inside the squad was essential for keeping balance within the team environment.
Paulo Bento says principles came before friendship with Cristiano Ronaldo
Paulo Bento explained that his relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo gradually became distant because he refused to change his coaching approach. The former Portugal boss said that while relationships inside football can evolve over time, he never believed in compromising his convictions just to maintain harmony with star players.
The coach stated that managers are hired to make important decisions for the team and must remain honest in that responsibility. He suggested that allowing players to influence major choices would weaken the role of the coach and create confusion inside the squad. Bento added that leadership becomes difficult when players are unsure about who truly controls the dressing room.Reflecting on his own playing career, Bento also shared that he never questioned coaches about selection decisions when he was a footballer.
However, he acknowledged that modern players often seek explanations from managers. He said there is nothing wrong with communication between players and coaches. But boundaries must still exist within the team structure.Bento further explained that successful teams require discipline, authority, and respect for hierarchy. According to him, once those lines begin to disappear, problems inside the squad quickly grow. Despite the tension that reportedly developed between him and Ronaldo, Bento remained firm that protecting his principles as a coach was more important than maintaining personal comfort with any individual player.
