4 key features coming to your Android smartwatch

Google has launched Wear OS 7, the latest version of its operating system built specifically for smartwatches. The software is rolling out to eligible Pixel Watch devices starting, with more Android wearables set to receive the upgrade over the coming months.

Google says that more than half of its users wear their smartwatches seven days a week, with the most active users keeping them on for over 23 hours a day. Hence, in order to support this level of all-day dependency, Wear OS 7 introduces deep system upgrades aimed at improving daily convenience, device connectivity, and power efficiency. Here are the four key features coming to your wrist with the Wear OS 7 update:

Live updates at a glance

Wear OS 7 brings Android’s “Live Updates” feature to the smartwatch screen.

Users can now track ongoing, time-sensitive events in real time without having to pull out their phones or repeatedly open specific apps. The feature lets users check the live score of a sports game, view a countdown for a food delivery order or monitor active workout metrics with a quick tilt of the wrist.

Control connected devices from write

Google says Wear OS 7 can now serve as a central hub for personal tech ecosystem. The software is optimised to communicate with wireless earbuds and upcoming smart eyewear.

For instance, if a user snaps a photo using their smart audio glasses, they can instantly preview the image on their watch face.Additionally, an updated media output switcher makes it simple to manage audio. With a few taps on the wrist, users can control music playback or transfer audio from their headphones over to home speakers.

Smart assistance with Gemini Intelligence

Later this year, select high-end smartwatches running Wear OS 7 will be updated with advanced “Gemini Intelligence” capabilities. This integration introduces several proactive tools:

  • Create my widget: Allowing users to build entirely custom dashboard widgets using casual, natural language commands.
  • Multi-step automation: Gemini will be able to take up complex app tasks directly from the watch, such as automatically booking a bike for a cycling class or ordering a routine meal from a restaurant.
  • Personal Intelligence: The AI will securely cross-reference information from connected Google apps, including Gmail, Google Search, and past chat histories, to deliver personalised suggestions unique to the user’s daily schedule.

Better battery life

To ensure that these new features do not drain the wearable, Google has introduced deep, system-level power optimisations, with up to a 10% improvement in average battery life, allowing the device to easily handle all-day tracking and overnight sleep monitoring on a single charge.
