United States President Donald Trump on Friday unveiled a new design for a limited-edition US passport created to commemorate America’s 250th anniversary, showcasing a special version featuring his likeness.

The sample passport page released by Trump features an image of the president looming over the Resolute Desk, with the text of the original Declaration of Independence in the background and his signature printed at the bottom. The opposite page displays John Trumbull’s iconic painting “The Declaration of Independence".

The newly revealed design appears to use a rendering of Trump based on his portrait housed at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in Washington. It differs from earlier illustrations released by the US State Department this year, which depicted the president using a different image.

Later on Friday, the White House shared the same passport design on X, captioning the post: “New U.S. Passport to Commemorate America’s 250th."

The special passport was first announced in April as part of celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of the United States.

Officials had described it as “a limited-edition U.S. passport to commemorate the historic occasion of America’s 250th anniversary," featuring “custom artwork and enhanced images on the front, back, and inside covers."

At the time, a US official, speaking to CNN, said that the commemorative version “will be the default passport out of the Washington Passport Agency when available" for people renewing their passports in person at that office.

“Online options or other locations will maintain existing passport design," the official added.

The current US passport features Percy Moran’s painting of Francis Scott Key on the inside front cover, depicting the morning after the bombardment of Fort McHenry, the battle that inspired Key to write what later became the US national anthem. Excerpts from the anthem are also printed inside the front cover.
