Victor Wembanyama said after Game 3 that the San Antonio Spurs were “going to see what we’re made of."
One game later, he backed up every word.
The 7-foot-4 French star produced a dominant all-round display with 33 points, eight rebounds, five assists and three blocks as San Antonio crushed the Oklahoma City Thunder 103-82 in Game 4 of the Western Conference Finals on Sunday night.
The result levels the series at 2-2 and completely shifts the momentum heading back to Oklahoma City for Game 5 on Tuesday.
Wembanyama had openly blamed himself after the Spurs’ 123-108 defeat in Game 3, admitting he needed to do more to involve his teammates and lead the response.
He delivered exactly that.
De’Aaron Fox added 12 points, 10 rebounds and five assists, while Stephon Castle and Devin Vassell chipped in with 13 points apiece. But this win was built as much on defense as it was on Wembanyama’s brilliance.
San Antonio held OKC to just 33 percent shooting from the field and an ugly 6-for-33 from three-point range. The Thunder’s 82 points marked their second-lowest total of the postseason.
After being completely overwhelmed by Oklahoma City’s bench in Game 3, the Spurs’ second unit also bounced back strongly, outscoring the Thunder reserves 30-34 after losing the bench battle 76-23 two nights earlier.
Thunder Struggle As Spurs Raise Intensity
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander finished with 19 points for Oklahoma City but shot just 6-for-15 from the field as the Thunder never truly found rhythm offensively.
For Wembanyama, though, the response was less about motivational speeches and more about execution.
“The truth is that we had never been in this kind of situation before," Wembanyama said.
“It was our first deficit in a playoff series and we just responded. It was nothing amazing. It wasn’t magic. We just did what we needed to do."
Still, the 21-year-old made it clear the Spurs are far from satisfied.
“The series is far from over," he added. “We’ve got six more wins before we can rest."
Now, with the series effectively reduced to a best-of-three, the pressure shifts right back onto Oklahoma City.
