West Bengal BJP to get a new president on July 3

The West Bengal unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is likely to get a new president by July 3. A notification issued by Dipak Barman, MLA and State returning office for the election to the State president of the BJP was issued on Tuesday (July 1, 2025).

West Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar has completed his term and is on extended tenure. Mr. Majumdar has also been serving as Union Minister of State for Education and Development of North East Region since 2024. The party’s policy of one party one post comes in the way of the re-election of the two time BJP MP from Balurghat.

The BJP is going to elect a new party president for West Bengal with less than a year remaining before the State goes to Assembly polls in 2026. The saffron party has emerged as the principal opposition party in the State, but the party with about 38% votes lags behind the ruling Trinamool Congress which has 48% votes in last year’s Lok Sabha polls.

After the 2021 Assembly polls in West Bengal, several new faces have emerged in the State unit of the BJP. Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, who left the Trinamool Congress to join the BJP in December 2020 and defeated Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee from Nandigram in 2021 Assembly polls has emerged as the most important leader. However, a section of the old guards in the party is still wary of Mr. Adhikari because of his long association with Trinamool Congress.

Meanwhile, a recent meeting between BJP Rajya Sabha MP Samik Bhattacharya and the top leadership of the party in Delhi has sparked speculations in political circles. An old loyalist of the party Mr. Bhattacharya has acceptance across the party and is also the chief spokesperson of the party in West Bengal. There are also some speculations about a few women leaders from the party being in the race for the West Bengal BJP president.
