West Bengal Elections 2026 Ballygunge Constituency: Ballygunge will go to the polls on April 29 in the second phase of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections. The urban constituency in south Kolkata is considered one of the more prominent seats in the city. It is being closely watched this year, with the Trinamool Congress (TMC) seen as the frontrunner, while the BJP is attempting to expand its support among the urban middle class.

West Bengal is voting in two phases on April 23 and April 29, with counting scheduled for May 4.

Ballygunge falls under the Kolkata Dakshin Lok Sabha constituency and is known for its well-off and diverse voter base. It is entirely urban and has traditionally been regarded as a stronghold of the Trinamool Congress. Even in the current election, the party is widely viewed as the favourite.

The seat is not typically seen as a battleground, but rather as an indicator of broader political trends in Kolkata’s urban electorate.

Why Ballygunge matters?

The importance of Ballygunge lies less in whether it changes hands and more in what the result signals. If the BJP manages to improve its performance here, it would suggest growing influence among urban voters. On the other hand, a comfortable win for TMC would reinforce its continued dominance in Kolkata.

What happened in last election?

The constituency has seen consistent victories for TMC in the past few elections. Late Subrata Mukherjee won the seat in 2021 with a large margin, defeating BJP candidate Lokenath Chatterjee by 75,359 votes.

After his death, a bye-election was held in April 2022. Babul Supriyo, representing TMC, won the seat with 51,199 votes. He defeated CPI(M) candidate Saira Shah Halim by a margin of 20,228 votes. Supriyo, now a cabinet minister in the government led by Mamata Banerjee, had earlier been a BJP MP from Asansol before joining TMC.

Who are the candidates in the 2026 poll?

In the 2026 election, TMC fielded veteran politician Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay, while the BJP nominated Shatorupa, aiming to appeal to urban middle-class voters. Other candidates include Rohan Mitra from the Congress, Afreen Begum from CPI(M), Dola Sarkar from BSP, Ayasanul Haque Sk. from SUCI, Faisal Khan from AJUP, and several independent candidates including Reepa Bhattacharjee, Gobinda Naskar, Shaik Imran, Uttam Kumar Das, and Mehboob Alam.

Ballygunge has seen shifting political control. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) dominated the seat for many years, winning it nine times, including a continuous stretch from 1977 to 2001. The Congress party won the seat three times, while the Communist Party of India and an independent candidate each secured one victory.

Since 2006, however, TMC has established clear dominance, winning five consecutive terms. The party first captured the seat in 2006 when Javed Ahmed Khan defeated CPI(M)’s Rabin Deb by 6,451 votes. Khan remains the only Muslim candidate to have won from the constituency, despite it having a Muslim-majority population.

Subrata Mukherjee then went on to win three consecutive terms in 2011, 2016 and 2021. His victory margins varied, from 41,185 votes in 2011 to 15,225 votes in 2016, before rising sharply again in 2021.

Election trends

TMC’s dominance in Ballygunge is also reflected in Lok Sabha elections. The party has consistently led in this segment since 2009. While the BJP emerged as the main challenger after 2014, it has not been able to close the gap.

TMC led the BJP by 14,352 votes in 2014, increased the margin to 54,452 in 2019, and further to 56,113 votes in 2024.

The constituency had 253,070 registered voters in 2024, up from 247,662 in 2021 and 240,645 in 2019. Muslims form the largest demographic group at 50.80 per cent, while Scheduled Caste voters make up 3.50 per cent.

Voter turnout in Ballygunge has generally remained moderate. It stood at 66.15 per cent in 2011, fell to 63.86 per cent in 2016, rose again to 66.95 per cent in 2019, then dropped to 60.99 per cent in 2021, and was recorded at 62.70 per cent in 2024.

As Ballygunge prepares to vote in the second phase, the focus remains on whether TMC can maintain its hold or if the BJP can make gains among urban voters.
