West Bengal Human Rights Commission orders probe into police parade charges

Kolkata: The West Bengal Human Rights Commission has ordered an inquiry into a complaint filed by Association for Protection of Democratic Rights joint President Ranjit Sur over allegations that officers of Golabari, Sibpur and Sankrail police stations made accused persons march in public in a humiliating manner, wearing only innerwear, with ropes tied around their waists.The complaint filed on May 26, 2026, referred to a newspaper report alleging the incident. After perusing the complaint, the Commission observed that a prima facie case was made out and admitted the petition.The Commission noted that a similar complaint was already entertained on June 2, 2026, in case No. 1894/25/0/2026, and directed that Sur’s complaint be tagged with that matter.The Commission directed its investigation wing, headed by superintendent of police Pinaki Ranjan Das, to conduct an investigation in the same manner as ordered in the earlier case and submit a preliminary report by June 20, 2026.

The state has also been directed to extend assistance.Notices under Regulation 16 have been issued to Ranjit Sur, the superintendent of police of Howrah Rural Police District, and the officers-in charge of Golabari, Shibpur and Sankrail police stations under the Howrah Police Commissionerate.The police authorities have been asked to assist the Commission’s investigation team in conducting the enquiry and filing the report. The matter has been listed before the same Bench on June 23, 2026.
