The ongoing investigation into the assassination of West Bengal chief minister Suvendu Adhikari’s close aide Chandranath Rath took a dramatic turn this week after West Bengal Police “mistakenly" arrested a man who is strong supporter of the Bhartiya Janata Party.
The CBI has told a Barasat court that West Bengal Police wrongly arrested a BJP worker in the murder case of Chandranath Rath, an aide to Bengal CM Suvendu Adhikari, leading to his release.
The agency said Raj Singh, initially held by the state SIT, was not involved in the killing and had been falsely implicated during the early stages of the probe. The court ordered his immediate release after the CBI submitted its findings.
Rath was shot dead in Madhyamgram on May 6 while returning home. His driver was also injured in the attack. The case was later handed over to the CBI, which formed a seven-member SIT to probe the alleged conspiracy and interstate links.
The state police had earlier arrested three suspects from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. However, the CBI later found discrepancies in the investigation and began re-examining the evidence and arrests made by the Bengal SIT.
