The contest is not merely about forming the next government, but about defining the direction of Bengal’s political narrative for the next five years.

The Election Commission has scheduled polling in two phases on April 23 and April 29, with counting set for May 4. As parties intensify campaigning, several constituencies have emerged as crucial battlegrounds that could significantly influence the overall outcome.

These seats reflect a mix of prestige contests, ideological clashes, demographic significance and localised issues. From high-profile face-offs involving Mamata Banerjee and Suvendu Adhikari to constituencies shaped by identity politics and regional aspirations, the electoral map of Bengal is dotted with key fights.

Bhabanipur: Mamata Banerjee’s Bastion Faces Direct Challenge

Bhabanipur in south Kolkata remains the most high-profile constituency in the state. Represented by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, it has long been a Trinamool Congress stronghold and serves as her political home turf.

However, this election has turned the spotlight firmly on the seat, with the BJP fielding Suvendu Adhikari against her. The contest is being seen as a sequel to the dramatic 2021 battle in Nandigram, where Adhikari defeated Banerjee. This time, the roles are reversed, with Adhikari entering her stronghold, making Bhabanipur a symbolic and high-stakes contest.

Nandigram: Symbol Of Political Turning Points

Nandigram in Purba Medinipur continues to hold immense political significance. The site of the 2007 anti-land acquisition movement, it played a crucial role in ending Left Front rule and propelling Banerjee to power.

In 2021, the constituency again grabbed national attention when Suvendu Adhikari defeated Mamata Banerjee. Even in 2026, Nandigram remains a symbolic seat, representing political prestige and ideological battles.

Sandeshkhali: Women’s Safety Narrative In Focus

Sandeshkhali in the Sunderbans delta has emerged as a politically sensitive constituency following allegations of violence and atrocities linked to local leadership.

The BJP has attempted to keep the issue alive, projecting it as part of a broader campaign on women’s safety. The candidacy of Rekha Patra in previous elections added prominence to the seat.

Gaighata: Matua Votes At Centre

Gaighata, located along the India–Bangladesh border in North 24 Parganas, is heavily influenced by the Matua community. This Scheduled Caste group plays a decisive role in shaping electoral outcomes.

The constituency has become a focal point in the debate over citizenship and refugee rights, particularly around the Citizenship Amendment Act. Both the BJP and the TMC are vying to consolidate support among Matua voters, making Gaighata a crucial contest.

Kharagpur Sadar: Urban Diversity Meets Political Contest

Kharagpur Sadar in Paschim Medinipur is known for its diverse electorate, including railway employees, traders and migrant workers. The constituency was once represented by Dilip Ghosh, giving it prominence in state politics.

With institutions like IIT Kharagpur nearby, the seat reflects a blend of academic influence and working-class concerns, making it an important urban battleground.

Sujapur: North Bengal’s Political Indicator

Sujapur in Malda district is expected to be closely watched due to its mixed demographic composition and substantial minority population.

Currently represented by Muhammad Abdul Ghani, the constituency often mirrors broader political trends in North Bengal. Its outcome could provide clues about regional shifts in voter sentiment.

Samserganj: Polarisation And 2025 Unrest

Samserganj in Murshidabad has gained prominence following violent protests in 2025 linked to the Waqf (Amendment) Act.

A Muslim-majority constituency, it saw the TMC dominate in 2021, with the Congress as the runner-up. The BJP is now aiming to expand its presence by capitalising on polarisation, making this an unpredictable and sensitive contest.

Dinhata: Volatile Contest In North Bengal

Dinhata in Cooch Behar district has witnessed intense electoral competition in recent years. With a significant Scheduled Tribe population, local issues such as agriculture and rural development play a key role.

The seat has seen a back-and-forth between the TMC and BJP, involving leaders like Udayan Guha and Nisith Pramanik. Its volatility makes it a key constituency to watch.

Asansol Dakshin: Industrial Belt Battleground

Asansol Dakshin represents the industrial heartland of Paschim Bardhaman. With a mix of industrial workers and urban voters, it reflects broader trends in the region.

Currently represented by BJP’s Agnimitra Paul, the seat is crucial for understanding shifts in support within Bengal’s industrial zones.

Siliguri And Dabgram-Fulbari: Gateway To Northeast

Siliguri and Dabgram-Fulbari in North Bengal have turned into intense battlegrounds. These constituencies are strategically located in the gateway to the Northeast and are witnessing fierce contests centred on development and governance.

The BJP has fielded Sankar Ghosh and Sikha Chatterjee, while the TMC has repositioned Gautam Deb to reclaim lost ground.
