The body of a 21-year-old Delta State University student, Demartravion "Trey" Reed, was discovered hanging from a tree on campus Monday morning.
Discovery on campus
Delta State University Chief of Police Michael Peeler confirmed the details at a press conference. He said:"At approximately 7:05 am, the University Police was notified of what appeared to be the body of a Black male hanging from a tree, central campus near the DSU pickleball course."
Peeler stated that he had requested the assistance of the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, the Bolivar County Sheriff's Office, and the Cleveland Police Department to aid in the investigation.The Bolivar County Coroner’s office issued its own statement: "At 7:32 a.m., the Bolivar County Coroner's office was notified by the Cleveland Police Department regarding an unresponsive individual on the campus of Delta State University.
At 8:08 a.m., representatives from the coroner's office arrived on the scene and observed an unresponsive subject hanging from a tree. At this current time, we are conducting a thorough death investigation.
"He added that, "Based on the preliminary examination, we can confirm that the deceased did not suffer any lacerations, contusions, compound fractures, broken bones, or injuries consistent with an assault.
At this time, there is no evidence to suggest the individual was physically attacked before his death."County Deputy Coroner Murray Roark told the Mississippi Free Press that he "saw no broken limbs." Roark added: "In my opinion, Reed's death was self-done, and I have reasons for that." However, the official reports are still awaited.
University and family response
Delta State University President Dr. Dan Ennis addressed the campus community at the press conference.
He said: "I want to reiterate Chief Peeler's comment. There is no evidence of a threat to campus, and there is no evidence the campus is unsafe at this point."Ennis also released a statement: "Our community is deeply saddened by this loss. I have spoken to Trey's family and expressed our heartbreak."The university announced the cancellation of all public events on Monday, including centennial celebrations. Opening ceremonies had been set for 1 p.m., and a time capsule was to open at 3 p.m. Classes were also canceled. The university added:
"Our community is deeply saddened by their loss. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends impacted.
Counselors and support services are available to students, faculty and staff through the O.W. Reily Counseling Center."Trey Reed’s family released a statement to Jackson news station 16 WAPT: "Trey was our little quiet light. He was sweet, well mannered, and would give you the world if he could. We ask that you continue to keep our family in your prayers as we continue to navigate through these unforeseen times."
Allegations and online reaction
A video described as showing Reed’s body hanging went viral online, intensifying controversy and speculation around the case.
People on the internet seem to be spreading a lot of news, but no such official reports of foul play has come to light, as of now.Delta State University canceled all events and classes Monday, with counseling and security measures expanded. Ennis noted that normal operations and classes would resume soon, with the chapel open and clergy in attendance.At present, investigators from multiple agencies are continuing their work. While family members and social media posts have raised questions about the circumstances of Trey Reed’s death, the coroner’s office has said there is no evidence of physical assault. The official investigation remains ongoing.
