Liverpool head coach Arne Slot opened up on his side of the story as the Premier League champions endure a challenging season, with star forward Mohamed Salah making his frustrations with the boss public after being dropped for a string of games.

Slot revealed that he sought to adapt and address some areas the team has been lagging behind in following the Reds’ swathe of defeats in the ongoing campaign. Salah has been left out of the Reds squad for their UEFA Champions League game against Inter as a result of his outburst.

“I don’t think it is up to me to debate what he thinks or what he feels, but it is definitely not what I feel," Slot began.

“In my opinion, what has happened is that I did not start a player who played many games for the club and me," said the Dutchman.

“I think we have struggled this season, but already, in the last past of last season, with game plans of the opponents, and I’m not talking only about the long ball that most teams use against us," he added.

“So I’ve tried to adapt, but after the games against PSV and Nottingham, where we looked very vulnerable, I decided to do something else and that’s what happened," the 47-year-old explained.

“That’s why I did not play Mo against West Ham, Sunderland, where he came in, and I did not play him against Leeds. But everyone can have their opinion and use his own words about what he thinks the situation is, but it is also up to us to react."

“If a player uses words, we cannot accept," he added.

Slot had said earlier that, “Usually I’m calm and polite, but that does not mean I’m weak".

Salah, who is Liverpool’s third-highest goalscorer with 250 goals in 420 appearances, has won two Premier League titles and the Champions League since joining from Roma in 2017. However, he has struggled this season, scoring just five times in 19 appearances as the Reds languish in ninth, 10 points behind leaders Arsenal after 15 games.
