Team India’s new fitness benchmark for players

Team India has introduced the Bronco Test as its latest fitness benchmark, replacing the long-followed Yo-Yo Test. Popular in rugby and football, the Bronco Test is a high-intensity endurance drill designed to assess stamina, speed, and recovery ability in just a few minutes.

The test involves continuous shuttle runs across set distances, pushing players to maintain pace under pressure. Its simple yet demanding format gives players a clear picture of whether they are fit enough to meet the physical demands of the sport. By adopting this standard, Indian cricket has aligned itself with global best practices in athlete conditioning.

What is Bronco Test

The Bronco Test is a high-intensity running drill commonly used in rugby and football, now adapted for cricket.

It requires players to run shuttle distances of 20m, 40m, and 60m in repeated circuits until they cover a total of 1,200 meters. The test is a direct measure of aerobic endurance, speed, and recovery under fatigue—qualities that are vital for cricketers who often spend long hours on the field.

How the Bronco Test works

The Bronco Test is structured into a series of shuttle runs:

  • Start at the baseline – The player begins at the starting line.
  • First shuttle (20m) – Run to the 20m mark and back to the baseline.
  • Second shuttle (40m) – Run to the 40m mark and back.
  • Third shuttle (60m) – Run to the 60m mark and return to the baseline.
  • One set complete – After completing 20m + 40m + 60m (back and forth), the player covers 120m.
  • Repeat the circuit – This 120m circuit is repeated five times, adding up to 1,200m total.
  • Time recorded – The final completion time is taken as the player’s score.
  • Elite athletes often finish in under 5 minutes.
  • For professional cricketers, finishing between 5–6 minutes is considered a good score.

Benefits of Bronco Test

  • Builds stamina – Helps athletes develop the endurance needed for long matches.
  • Tests recovery – Simulates the stop-start demands of cricket with minimal rest.
  • Simple and measurable – Provides an easy way to assess overall fitness in a short time.
  • Boosts cardiovascular health – Improves heart and lung efficiency through sustained intensity.
  • Encourages competition – Players can benchmark their scores and push for better performance.

The Bronco Test has emerged as a powerful tool to evaluate fitness and mental toughness. Beyond cricket, it is widely used in other sports to gauge athletic endurance and consistency.
