What is Elon Musk’s Tesla mega AI chip fab project: Expected launch, tech companies involved and key things to know

Elon Musk recently announced that Tesla’s Terafab project will launch within seven days. This is an ambitious project wherein the company plans to build what may be one of the largest artificial intelligence (AI) chip manufacturing facilities ever made.

The announcement was made by Musk on March 14, puts a firm timeline on a project he has been hinting at for over a year.“Terafab Project launches in 7 days,” Musk said in a post on X (formerly Twitter – signalling that Tesla is preparing to take the next step toward becoming self-sufficient in the AI chips.

What is the Terafab

The Terafab is Tesla's plan to build its own giant chip fabrication facility, which Musk has described as a “gigafactory, but way bigger.”

The terafab will be focused on producing AI chips in the vast quantities Tesla believes it will need for the next generation of its vehicles.“Even when we extrapolate the best-case scenario for chip production from our suppliers, it's still not enough,” Musk said at Tesla's Annual General Meeting last year, adding, “I think we may have to do a Tesla terafab. It's like giga but way bigger. I can't see any other way to get to the volume of chips that we're looking for.

So I think we're probably going to have to build a gigantic chip fab. It's got to be done.”

What chip will Terafab build

The Terafab is being built around Tesla’s fifth-generation AI chip, which is referred to as the AI5. This chip is designed to power Tesla's autonomous driving systems, including its Full Self-Driving (FSD) software, and AI solutions for robotics. Musk has teased the AI5 chip on multiple occasion.

Which companies are involved

Tesla is not building this capability with industry bigwigs.

Musk has confirmed partnerships with two of the world's most important semiconductor manufacturers: TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company), which is the world’s largest and most advanced contract chipmaker. It produces chips for Apple, Nvidia, Google and various other major technology companies.Musk’s has also involved Samsung, South Korea's semiconductor giant in Tesla's chip manufacturing plans.

Beyond manufacturing partners, Musk has also floated the possibility of working with Intel. At Tesla's AGM, he said: “You know, maybe we'll do something with Intel. We haven't signed any deal, but it's probably worth having discussions with Intel.”The global demand for AI chips has exploded in recent years, with companies like Nvidia, Google, Microsoft and Amazon all competing for manufacturing capacity at the same foundries.
