Italian tennis star Jannik Sinner on Sunday, July 13, became the first from his country to win a Wimbledon title, as he beat his biggest rival, Carlos Alcaraz, to stop the latter’s long unbeaten streak at the Championships. This was Sinner’s second Grand Slam triumph of the year, having earlier won the Australian Open.

With five ATP 250 and one ATP 500 tournament (Mubadla Citi DC Open) scheduled this month, Sinner will next be seen in action at the Masters 1000 National Bank Open, which will be played from July 27 in Toronto.

Moreover, this tournament can prove to be another blockbuster with Alcaraz also in the draw.

The National Bank Open, which switches base between Toronto and Montreal each year, is the first event where Sinner has confirmed taking part.

Last year’s final at the tournament had thrown up a surprise winner in the form of Alexei Popyrin. Sinner had surprisingly lost to eventual runners-up Andrey Rublev in three sets and would be looking forward to putting up a convincing show this time.

Besides Sinner, Alcaraz and all the other top 10 tennis stars feature in the entry list for the National Bank Open this year.

Sinner avenged an agonising French Open final defeat to Alcaraz as he battered the latter into submission with a dynamic display of power hitting on Centre Court on Sunday.

Sinner’s 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 win against Alcaraz ended the latter’s two-year reign as Wimbledon champion and gave Sinner his fourth major crown. The Italian won the Australian and the US Open last year.

Sinner has reached the last four major finals, winning three of them and the world number one has no intention of resting on his laurels.

It was a cathartic win against Alcaraz for Sinner after he squandered a two-set lead and blew three championship points against the former at Roland Garros last month.

Sinner admitted it was vital to defeat Alcaraz for the first time in two years. While he had spent the last five weeks insisting he would not let his French Open collapse affect him, he revealed he had to work hard to move on from the defeat to Alcaraz before launching his Wimbledon challenge.
