The Bengaluru-based software engineer who was arrested for allegedly killing his parents has been diagnosed with schizophrenia. He had been mentally disturbed as he had no jobs for years.

“Doctors have diagnosed him with schizophrenia (psychosis). We produced him before the court to seek custodial interrogation, but the court directed that he be sent to Nimhans for a medical fitness certification before his custody can be granted," a senior police officer said.

Accordingly, Rohan has been sent to judicial custody and admitted to Nimhans for counselling. “We will take him into police custody for further investigation," Deccan Herald quote the officer as saying.

Rohan’s father, Naveen Chandra Bhat (60), was a retired Indian Navy captain, while his mother, Dr Shyamala Bhat (55), was a dentist. He also has a younger sister, Rashmi Chandra Bhat, who is based in the United States.

Around 8.30 am on Wednesday, Rohan visited his parents’ home in Vignan Nagar, near HAL, and stabbed them to death. Some morning walkers saw him run out in bloodstained clothes. They also heard his parents’ cries for help.

According to the preliminary investigations, Rohan allegedly stabbed his parents in the back, stomach, neck, face and hands multiple times during an altercation.

Police investigations into the double murder that shocked the city have revealed that Rohan was suffering from a severe mental condition.

Rohan reportedly told the police that he believed his mother was giving him milk mixed with sleeping pills in an attempt to kill him, while his father often scolded him for “tarnishing" the family’s reputation by remaining unemployed. He also said he was frequently compared to his sister, who is well settled in the US.

Police also suspect that Rohan had been pressuring his parents for money, as he wanted to start his own venture after returning from the US.
