Different types of gas fuels like LPG, PNG, CNG and LNG are used in our daily lives, but people often confuse them.

LPG is used as a cooking gas in most Indian household, PNG flows through pipelines to urban homes. CNG fuels vehicles, and LNG supports large-scale energy supply and energy.

What Is LPG?
LPG stands for Liquified Petroleum Gas. For millions of households, cooking begins with LPG. It is produced during crude oil refining and natural gas processing. It mainly consists of propane and butane gases, which are compressed into liquid form and stored in cylinders.

How LPG Became A Household Staple In India?
LPG became a household staple in India after the government expanded access through programmes like Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, which provided subsididsed LPG connections to low-income households. Today, it remains India’s primary cooking fuel, especially in areas where pipelines are not available.

What Is PNG?
PNG stands for Piped Natural Gas. Households that do not prefer to deal with cylinders, opt for PNG. It is simply natural gas delivered directly through pipelines to homes, restaurants, and industries. This system works much like a water connection. Gas flows through an underground pipeline network, and consumers pay based on usage recorded by a meter.

What Is CNG?
CNG stands for Compressed Natural Gas. It has become a common sight on city roads. CNG is a natural gas compressed at high pressure and stored in cylinders. It is primarily used as a vehicle fuel. Compared with petrol and diesel, CNG burns more cleanly and produces fewer emissions. Hence, the number of CNG vehicles has grown steadily across Indian cities.

What Is LNG?
LNG stands for Liquified Natural Gas (LNG). It plays a different role in India’s energy supply chain. LNG is a natural gas cooled to -162 degree C, turning it into liquid form. This reduces its volume drastically, making it easier to transport across long distances by ship. LNG is not usually consumed directly by households but it feeds the broader gas supply system.
