The Toronto Maple Leafs' decision to appoint Jim Hiller as the franchise's 41st head coach of the team may have surprised many, but the coach has begun analyzing the players and the team's performance over the years.

The coach has recently analyzed Auston Matthews' performance over the years and believes that his production has dipped significantly over the years. Matthews was drafted by the Leafs No. 1 overall in the 2016 NHL Draft and spent his first three seasons playing under Hiller, and it is to be noted that Hiller has served as an assistant coach for the Leafs for four years from 2015 until 2019.

Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Jim Hiller cites a reason why Auston Matthews’ production has dipped

Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Jim Hiller has recently analyzed that team's performance and has provided a significant reason for believing Auston Matthews' recent dip in goal production. Hiller, who was officially introduced as the Maple Leafs' head coach this week, is no stranger to Matthews. The 57-year-old spent four seasons as an assistant coach in Toronto from 2015 to 2019, overlapping with the early years of Matthews' NHL career after the forward was selected first overall in the 2016 NHL Draft.Though Matthews has established himself as one of the NHL's elite goal scorers, Jim Hiller has cited reasons why Auston Matthews’ production has dipped significantly. According to Hiller, the reason for Auston Matthews recent dip in goal production may have to do with the team's power play rather than the star center's individual performance. While addressing the media during a press conference, Hiller stated, “There are a lot of things there.

One thing — Auston was always a really dangerous player on the power play. I don’t think they’ve been as dangerous recently. I think that is one area."He further said, “Of course, there is five-on-five, and him being completely healthy, and those types of things. But I hope and envision we can get our power play going a little bit more. For the top guys, when they get some good momentum on the power play, it generally spreads out to the five-on-five game.

That will be a real focus.”

Rather than pointing to the forward's individual play, the new coach suggested the Maple Leafs' struggling power play has played a major role. Besides, Matthews has been away from the team for a prolonged period due to his Grade 3 MCL tear and quad contusion, which he sustained in a knee-on-knee collision with Anaheim Ducks defenseman Radko Gudas. The Toronto Maple Leafs captain has recently undergone surgery as part of his recovery.

However, he plans to return to the team very soon.

Toronto Maple Leafs believe Jim Hiller has been the right choice for being a head coach

The Toronto Maple Leafs have named Jim Hiller as the franchise's 41st head coach, completing a major responsibility ahead of the 2026 NHL Draft. Hiller, as a coach, has a wide range of experience as he has most recently coached the Los Angeles Kings, compiling a 93-58-24 record across parts of three seasons before being dismissed in March. Hiller was praised for his leadership qualities, extensive coaching experience, and his ability to connect well with players.

Despite his departure years ago, the Maple Leafs remained impressed with his growth as a coach and his evolving leadership style.
